What’s It Worth? It’s All In The Backstory

What’s It Worth? It’s All In The Backstory

The internet has changed the course of jewelry and watch collecting dramatically. At the start of my career in antiques, it was considered almost a kiss of death for a watch to be heavily inscribed with the former owner’s name and/or occasion of receipt. And vintage rings with information engraved inside were quickly taken to a bench jeweler to remove this personalization, since it was so much easier to sell a piece without it.

What’s It Worth? Emeralds Past And Present

Today I will write about emeralds past and present. I will talk about a current emerald in our store from a local dealer and offer an update on an emerald I wrote about last year.

What’s It Worth - Experience A Glimpse Into Our World’s History

These past few weeks have been pretty exciting at Hess Fine Art as we’ve been getting ready for our big fall arts, sports, important silver and autograph auction.

This month we purchased three nice paintings. The one pictured is an important watercolor by Otto Eerleman that we purchased from a local art dealer. It depicts Napoleon at a rest stop in France. Our auction estimate is $7000-$9000.

What’s It Worth - Two Titans Craft A Masterpiece

Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. had a very cozy relationship early on. In fact, at one point, Patek Philippe and Tiffany even shared the same building in Switzerland, according to many sources.

In 1952, Bulova watch company was one of the leading manufacturers of affordable – indeed fine – timepieces in America. In fact, it is often written that in the 1940s and ’50s, they were one of the biggest advertisers of any product of any kind in the U.S.!

What’s It Worth - More On Market Value Vs Celebrity Value

A few months ago, we boasted about our “robust watchmaking department” with two Rolex- and Audemars Piguettrained watchmakers on staff, and discussed the Rolex President (owned by Paul Stanley of KISS) that we were asked to repair.

What’s It Worth? Value By Land, Sea And Air

What’s It Worth? Value By Land, Sea And Air

We distinguish vintage men’s watches three ways … land, sea and air.

Land watches are typically characterized as chronographs and alarm watches. Chronographs at one time were used to time sporting events – most often, horse races and auto races. Any chronograph, working or not, is worth at least $100 and some vintages such as Omega, Breitling and Longines, bring in $500-$2,000  – in steel, and more in gold – even if they don’t work.

What’s It Worth? On Millennials And Diamonds

What’s It Worth - On Millennials And Diamonds

It’s been said that millennials aren’t interested in diamonds, but I haven’t found that to be the case. While statistics indicate that they prefer to shop online, diamonds are one of the few items that should never be purchased sight unseen — even experts don’t do that. Why? Because a diamond’s visual impact can vary considerably due to the tiniest differences in cut or polish.

What’s It Worth - The High Value Of Promotion

It’s been said that there is a fine line between promotion and advertising. In some languages, the words “propaganda” and “advertising” are the same word!
